Learning around your life
Amid packed diaries and multiple demands on your time, traditional courses can seem daunting. Luckily, distance learning can fit around your schedule and offer a route into a career in accounting, as Georgina Coombes discovered
I was in a bit of a rut at work. My family has a business and there wasn't anywhere for me to go really, other than to take on a new responsibility. Studying accounting really seemed like a sensible step but also a bit of a challenge as I only really knew the basics.
Distance learning is great because it can fit in around your life. I tend to try to set aside an hour or two in the evenings to study. Some days finding the motivation is a struggle, but I know there’s a prize at the end of it.
Earn and learn
Being able to learn while holding down a full-time job and having a small child has meant I've managed to keep earning.
I needed a way to study in my own time, so distance learning ticked that box. You can start when you want and take it at your own pace, which is hugely appealing.
Without the option of distance learning, I'd never have been able to do this
Enabling participation
I actually don't join in the live classes due to the timings not fitting in, but I do have access to them after. Without the option of distance learning, I'd never have been able to do this. I couldn't find a local college offering AAT courses.
On occasion, I feel it would be beneficial to speak to a tutor and get an immediate answer when something isn't sticking right. One way I’ve managed to help with that is by joining groups on Facebook.
Distance learning can feel a little isolating, so knowing someone else is struggling with the same topics as you are can really help with motivation.
