Welcome
From the President
Welcome back to AAT Student Magazine, guiding you through your studies with practical, real-world insights which will equip you for your accounting qualifications and allow you to step with confidence into your future career.
Something I’ve placed great emphasis on during my term as President is employability, and it’s no exaggeration to say an AAT qualification will mark you out to potential employers as someone who will bring great experience to bear in their firm or finance team.
While mastering core accounting skills, the likes of which we cover in Instant Expert and Excel Super-Stars, are vital, it’s adding power skills to your repertoire - such as communication and presentation skills - which will give your career that extra boost.
Finally, I write this column with a mix of emotions as my term as President draws to an end. I have thoroughly enjoyed my year. It is heartening to know an enthusiastic and talented cohort of new accounting technicians will soon join the workforce. Stick with your studies, and you and your employer (current or prospective) will see the benefits soon enough.

Editor's letter
Firstly, I should probably introduce myself. I’m Calum, and I’m delighted to be your new editor of AAT Student, taking over from Hannah’s excellent work.
I’m also editor of AAT’s members’ magazine, AT, which you’ll be able to receive once you’ve completed your studies and qualified.
I’d also like to make you aware of the upcoming student conference, AccelerAATe Online, which will be held 29–31 January 2025. It takes place every January and consists of six sessions across three days. Our flagship student event of the year allows us to provide live support from experts, covering everything from supercharging your studies and refining your exam technique, to mental health and career tips.
Finally, this issue is packed with all sorts of information to motivate and guide you through your studies. From getting the most out of Excel in our latest instalment of Super-stars, to inspirational AAT stories from Rachel Harris, Heather Palmer and Grace Hardy, there's plenty to get your teeth into.
