Welcome

From the President

Every day is a learning experience. I've been doing it for quite a long time now, but it doesn't stop.

So much of this edition of AAT Student Magazine goes to show the importance of continuous learning and development throughout our careers.

Gearing up for exams can be stressful, and trying to balance that with a social life and home life can be difficult. I remember doing so with cold clarity: studying, with a non-sleeping baby to tend to. That was a bit testing.

But it’s worth remembering the tutors and the training organisations are there to help you and they make such a huge difference. It can be as little as five minutes to go over a concept you're struggling with, but they will help you get there. So, do feel that you can go to your tutors.

You may get occasional failures in your exams, but it’s about ‘bouncebackability’: dusting yourself down, talking to your friends, gathering your support mechanisms and just going for it. It will pay itself back. That’s a sign of the resilience you’ll need to attain your qualifications and in your career beyond.

Editor's letter

If there’s a theme in this edition of AAT Student Magazine, it’s around resilience. Stories such as Ali Jaw’s (this issue’s cover story) and Dave Bennett’s (Break through) demonstrate why it’s important to persist when hurdles make studying more difficult, particularly given the flexibility of studying via AAT.

The fruits of doing so are potentially enormous: a new, exciting career in finance and the opportunity to develop new skills in an array of sectors and industries.

In doing so, it’s vital not to be too hard on yourself when setbacks occur. Our Power Skills features in this issue demonstrate the impact cutting yourself some slack can have. With exams season in full swing, that’s something that could stand students in good stead.
