Welcome

From the President

I know that, like I did 12 years into my career, many of you will be changing tracks. Doing so likely presents you with a significant opportunity for a point of differentiation and could be hugely advantageous to you.

In my case, having moved from the oil and gas industry – in which I had been conducting geophysical surveys and interpreting geological data – into tax, I brought with me a hugely analytical mindset. This edition’s cover story shows us how the skills teachers possess can be of enormous use in accounting.

For those of you doing this, it’s important to consider the profession you’re coming from and the skills it’s furnished you with. It’s likely that at least some of these will be useful in your new career, whether they are technical or other power skills.

This extends to neurodiversity too. Many people with neurodiversities can understandably feel alienated when reasonable adaptations aren’t made, and that’s a tremendous shame as they have an enormous amount to offer. It’s about recognising where your talents lie and how to unlock it.

Editor's letter

Many of you will be in the process of changing careers and looking to take the next step into an exciting accounting career. Seeing successful examples of others who have taken the plunge and been successful is crucial to those of you in that position.

This edition’s cover story is one such great example. Craig Dyer MAAT AATQB made a virtue of his previous career as a teacher, particularly when it came to his studies. There are many hugely useful lessons for you to take from his example and apply to your own approach to your studies.

Elsewhere, I’d like to highlight the launch of AAT Careers Hub, which will be an extremely useful resource when it comes to career opportunities. Make sure you familiarise yourself with it so you can make the most of it and take your next step when you’re ready.
