Welcome

From the President

It’s fair to say that my time as AAT president has been unique, split as it has been between the old world and the new. I don’t think any president has trodden that particular path before.

We’ve now got a much stronger governance system and I’ve become more a constitutional monarch than a head of state, taking on an ambassadorial role for AAT and leading the Members’ Advisory Council (MAC) with its vital role in giving the membership a voice.

We have a brilliant new skills-based board, headed by Sir Stephen Hillier, who are taking things forward and the future for AAT is very much an exciting one.

It’s a natural progression, and members will have greater chance to engage and have their voice heard through the Members’ Advisory Council, chaired by the president.

With Lucy Cohen FMAAT taking on the presidency in October, we go from strength to strength, and I very much look forward to her tenure.

Before, then, however, there is still work to do. On 24 September, AAT published its annual report via its website, and physical copies will be distributed at the Annual General Meeting in October.

Mentorship is can prove incredibly powerful for anyone embarking on a new career. Being taken under the wing of a more experienced colleague and peer can enable mentees to learn new skills, gain experience and access to opportunities they may not have been able to otherwise.

Many of the cases we see in this issue’s Power Skills piece show just how much of a boost mentorship can be to your accounting career, and just how much AAT members are keen to pay it forward. It’s heartening to see.

There are many ways in which you can find a mentor yourself – in your existing workplace or attending your local AAT branch meetings, networking events and at conferences and making a connection. Taking that step could make all the difference in your career.
